1. backup the project.
2. load project, right click solution, select Rename and enter "MySlnName".
3. Save All and close project.

4. In windows explorer rename the project filename to MyPrjName.vcxproj.
5. Using notepad open the MySlnName.sln file and change the project name.

      Project ... = "MyPrjName", "MyPrjName.vcxproj", ...

6. Re-open the solution.

this worked for me but any comments welcome.
